Overall Thoughts:
It’s difficult not to be attracted to The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Rachel Brosnahan plays Miriam Maisel, a dedicated wife and mother who is well embedded into her 1950's lifestyle. But her ambitions and her personality burst the seams of a commonplace existence when she staggers across her true calling of making people laugh. With Alex Borstein as her "tough-guy" agent, who is just as much a fish-out-of-water, they formulate a "team-to-root-for" as they make mistakes along the way, both personal and professional. I have to mention Tony Shalhoub, who plays Miriam's father, and who represents a magnetic supporting cast that makes this show both fun and involved.
What Makes This Show Special:
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel gives us several gifts: a little history about the rise of stand-up comedy; the story of making sacrifices in order to live out a passion; and the enduring humor from parents who can't identify with their adult children who want to do things very differently than they did.
Beware Of:
In-laws have certainly been the target of humor for many comedy TV shows, and most of the time its an exaggerated representation of real-life. Because Maisel takes place more than 60 years ago, we believe the in-lawful behavior may actually be fairly accurate, giving us more empathy for the main characters.
For Dawg Eyes Only: Dawgs have a hard time being nostalgic for days gone by. "Ahh yes. The 1950's. A simpler time." Nope, it's just not working.
